  • 400 grams cremini or white button mushrooms
  • 1 teaspoon finely-chopped garlic
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion or 1 medium onion
  • 1/2 to 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon crushed black pepper
  • Garlic greens (chives) or spring onion greens for garnish or coriander or parsley leaves
  • Cheddar cheese or mozzarella cheese or grated processed cheese as required
  • Salt as required

How to make

Preparing Mushrooms

  1. Firstly, rinse and wipe dry 400 grams of white button or brown mushrooms. It is important to slice off a bit of the stalks' muddy part and discard them. Thereafter, just break stalk from all of the mushrooms to be used.

  2. Keep the stalks and the mushroom caps aside.

  3. Finely chop off all the stalks.

How To Make Mushroom Stuffing?

In a pan, heat 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

  1. Add 1 teaspoon of finely-chopped garlic.

  2. Add 1/3 cup of chopped onions.

  3. Start to sauté the chopped onions on a low to medium flame for about 3-6 minutes or till they become golden or light golden.

  4. Add the finely-chopped mushroom stalks. Mix them well and sauté on a medium flame. Some moisture or water will get released and it is very much normal.

  5. Sauté till the mixture of mushroom gets dried and there is no moisture or water left.

  6. Add 1/2 teaspoon dried basil, 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon crushed black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon dried Oregano. Any fresh herbs or dried herbs of liking may also be added at this stage if required.

  7. Season it with salt and mix well.

  8. Switch off the flame and let the stuffing of mushrooms cool down a bit.

  9. Taste it and add more salt, black pepper, or herbs if required.

Preparing, Stuffing, And Baking Mushrooms

  1. Place the stuffing with a small spoon in each of the mushroom caps. It is important to preheat the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 15-20 minutes before you start with stuffing the mushroom caps.

  2. Use cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, or processed cheese to top up.

  3. Use some olive oil or butter to grease a baking tray. Place the caps of stuffed mushrooms on the tray.

  4. Keep the tray in the preheated oven and bake at 180 degrees Celsius for about 15-20 minutes. The point is to bake till the mushrooms shrink a bit in their size and water starts getting released from them. The colour of the mushrooms will start getting darkened and the cheese will melt.

  5. Allow it to cool for about 2-5 minutes and then serve the hot stuffed mushrooms as a starter dish with a chutney, sauce, or dip.
